The runaway Moon, in effect, becomes the "spacecraft" on which the protagonists travel, searching for a new home. The force of the blast propels the Moon like an enormous booster rocket, hurling it out of Earth orbit and into deep space at colossal speed, thus stranding the 311 personnel stationed on Alpha. Humanity had been storing its nuclear waste in vast disposal sites on the far side of the Moon, but when an unknown form of "magnetic radiation" is detected, the accumulated waste reaches critical mass and causes a massive thermonuclear explosion on 13 September 1999. The premise of Space: 1999 centres on the plight of the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, a scientific research centre on the Moon. Since these books aren’t interconnected, reading them in the sequential order of the respective series is recommended. Recommended Reading Order for Non-Cosmere Books The Alloy of Law is an okay jumping in spot for the Cosmere, but keep in mind that this book has spoilers for the original Mistborn trilogy. Finding these easter eggs is one of the things that makes re-reading the books so much fun. There are tidbits in each of the books that inform the other books, but you don’t have to notice these things to enjoy the story by itself. That said, it really doesn’t matter which Cosmere series you start with, which means any of these books are good starting points: I recommended reading the books in sequential order rather than trying to dive into the second book in a series without having read the first book. Recommended Reading Order for Cosmere Books If you’re looking something that will appeal to young adults, try Steelheart, Mistborn, or The Rithmatist. If you’re a younger reader or want something humorous and lighthearted, try Alcatraz vs. If you consider yourself a fantasy reader, try Mistborn: the Final Empire or The Way of Kings. If you don’t typically read fantasy, try Steelheart or Elantris. If you’re new to my books, here’s a primer on where to start. Usool al-Fiqh - Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence I end up having to rub my tummy, pacing in my bedroom, and getting in and out of bed to keep it down. Things sure aren’t what they used to be in that department. I still like noodles, but now it’s the digestion part that bothers me. Of my three meals a day, one was always some noodle dish. I used to like eating dishes like this when I was young. I pick out a long, thick noodle and slurp it down. She looks as if she’s about to ask another question but only says, Oh. I make up some nonexistent lunch with a person she might remember me mentioning before. And while I knew that many drugs could and did come from natural products - Oncovin, one of the drugs in MOPP, in fact, had been derived from the periwinkle plant - I didn’t usually have the raw material dumped on my desk. Chemotherapy, once highly reviled, would become accepted as a viable treatment by many oncologists. My paper showing that we could cure an advanced cancer in adults, Hodgkin’s disease, with a combination chemotherapy regimen called MOPP had just been published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. I was then head of the Solid Tumor Service at the National Cancer Institute, part of an ambitious program to prove to skeptical physicians that cancer could be managed - even defeated - by new combinations of chemical compounds known as chemotherapy. In this installment, Elizabeth DeVita-Raeburn shares a story from an early draft of her 2015 book “The Death of Cancer,” as told to her by her father, the oncologist and chemotherapy pioneer, Vincent DeVita, Jr. WHAT I LEFT OUT is a recurring feature in which book authors are invited to share anecdotes and narratives that, for whatever reason, did not make it into their final manuscripts.
